Pure Pursuits Australia – Beyond the beaches

Alquemie

In March 2020, Alquemie, in conjunction with Tourism Australia, hosted PURE Pursuits, a 5-day event designed to transform the travel industry through in-depth, peer-to-peer discussions, insightful workshops and exhilarating challenges. PURE Pursuits Australia brought together a group of senior visionaries within the industry at a critical time for us all. It provided an incredible landscape to discuss and workshop the current landscape and provided invaluable learnings for everyone to move forward with in their businesses. It proved – as we all know – that we are #allinthistogether.

“I was blown away by every single detail that went into such a remarkable, seamless and memorable week. The attention to detail and weaving in of indigenous and regeneration narratives, along with the incredible backdrops you chose to highlight, came together to leave everyone spellbound by the country, the people and so importantly, the scale of the regeneration underway.”  (Jessica Den Boer – This is Beyond)

BRENDON BEVAN – PRIVATE GUIDE

Brendon grew up on the family owned Game Lodge in the Northern Provence of South Africa near the Gaborone border with Botswana – an environment which was to influence his life dramatically and ultimately form the foundation of a very fortunate career guiding in some of the most pristine habitat Africa has to offer.

An unquenchable thirst for knowledge saw Brendon navigate his way throughout Southern Africa, guiding and managing lodges in some of the most remote and exclusive areas of South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Zambia.

In 2010, that same thirst drew Brendon deep into the Australian Outback having fallen in love with an entirely new wilderness. Working with the most exclusive and wildlife focussed lodges that Outback Australia has to offer, Brendon’s guiding career spans more than two decades and traverses two of the most environmentally diverse continents on Earth.

To experience wilderness, is to reconnect on an almost primal level, to engage all of the senses and rediscover yourself in the vastness of nature.

GOLDFIELD & BANKS AUSTRALIA

The Goldfield & Banks Australia story actually begins on the other side of the world when Dimitri Weber – like so many voyagers before him – set out on a journey to discover the curious, enigmatic land that lay far beyond the horizon. Falling in love with Australia’s dramatic, contrasting landscapes, Dimitri set out to capture this extraordinary beauty and share it with the world.

That sense of discovery is the essence Goldfield & Banks Australia. Our luxury perfume celebrates the unrelenting spirit of Australia, from the pristine beaches of the southern coastline to the endless red dirt plains of the desert heartland.

Goldfield & Banks Australia also pays homage to Australia’s first botanist and naturalist Joseph Banks. A curious explorer and prodigious collector, Banks’ collection of Australian plants, seeds, insects, and wildlife was the first to reveal the vast botanical richness of the continent to the European world.

Volunteer tree planting for koalas

I recently spent a day with Janine Duffy, one of Australia’s best nature guides, planting trees that will soon become koala habitat.  In addition to her nature tourism business Echidna Walkabout Tours, Janine recently founded Koala Clancy, a not-for-profit that plants trees for koalas, creates new habitat and advocates for better protection of wild koalas.

It was a chilly Sunday morning but our group of 20 were rugged up and keen to help. We were on a gorgeous private farm about an hour east from Melbourne. The property owners were generously allowing perfectly good farm land to be re-populated with thousands of trees.

Janine’s passion and enthusiasm to help the koalas is contagious. She explained the issues such as loss of habitat due to humans and the recent bushfires, and that a single koala typically needs a huge range of about 5,000 trees (even if they only use about 350 of them). This year she had planned to plant 30,000 trees however with Covid-19 affecting things the aim is now 15,000. Her goal is to create a wildlife corridor which spans multiple properties and connects with the You Yangs and Brisbane Ranges.

With a little bit of instruction we were underway. The holes were already dug, and the saplings next to them ready to plant so it felt like the hard work was already done. The other volunteers were a pleasure to be around – all of them interested in nature and keen to give back. For some it was also their first time, but others had done tree planting once or twice before.

After a few hours we had planted 500 trees. It was a really satisfying feeling to know that in four to six years they will already be strong enough for koalas.

After we finished the morning’s work Janine took us on a walk to show us how quickly some recently planted trees had grown, and then on a bush walk. It was a lovely way to finish the day.

Travellers are welcome to join a group to help with the koala habitat recovery. There are one, two or three day options on set dates – all with planting in the morning and nature walks in the afternoon.  For people who can’t make a set date, private arrangements can also be made.

1 day Koala Recovery Experience

(2 or 3 day options are also available)

Depart Melbourne city accommodation. Travel about an hour west to our tree planting site near the You Yangs Ranges.

The tree planting sites are usually along rivers, creeks and near waterholes on farms on the Western Plains. The morning is spent planting koala trees in these high-quality, fertile sites, often in the company of the landowner, local community members and Koala Clancy Foundation volunteers and staff. Holes are pre-dug to make tree planting quick and easy.

Lunch is usually taken picnic-style either at the planting site or in nearby bushland.

The afternoon is spent on nature walks to visit the koalas that will benefit most from the tree planting. Other wildlife is frequently seen. Return to Melbourne around 4pm.

Upcoming dates: 2020: August: 6, 7, 8 and 20, 21, 22 2021: July: 1, 2, 3 and 16, 17, 18 and 29, 30, 31 August: 13,14,15 and 26, 27, 28

Please contact Alquemie to include an experience like this as part of an itinerary info@alquemie.com.au.

For Melbourne locals wishing to just volunteer, please contact Koala Clancy directly.

Epic 6-day Private Kimberley Helicopter Safari

This 6-day Private Kimberley Helicopter Safari itinerary includes time at the Kimberley’s most iconic and scenic sites, as well as overnight stays in the region’s best luxury lodges and wilderness retreats – Berkeley River Lodge, Kimberley Coastal Camp and El Questro. The tours are private, and travelling by helicopter allows you the flexibility to land and explore remote and otherwise inaccessible areas as you wish. Imagine resting atop a mountain pinnacle to enjoy the sunset with your favourite cold drink, fishing in wild rivers, exploring galleries of the oldest rock art on earth, soaring through gorges and touching down to swim in secret springs and waterfalls…yep, this is definitely one for the bucket list.

Day 1 – Kununurra to Berkeley River Lodge

Lift off from Kununurra to soar over the Ord River following its path west past the huge farms of the Ord Irrigation area. View the incredible patterns in the mud flats surrounding the town of Wyndham where five huge rivers meet, emptying into the Cambridge Gulf where some of the Kimberley’s biggest estuarine crocodiles live.

Cambridge Gulf
Cambridge Gulf

Crossing the Gulf you’ll pass over ancient traditional lands of the Balangarra people. Flying onwards, the ranges rise ahead with the watercourses of the De Lan Court and Berkeley Rivers beneath you. Land at a scenic location to enjoy refreshments in a place where few others have ever been before. Fly low through the gorges of the Berkeley River to the Timor Sea and land at the oceanside helipad of the Berkeley River Lodge in time for breakfast.

In a completely secluded wilderness location that is accessible only by air or boat Berkeley River Lodge is nestled between the impressive backdrop of the beautiful Berkeley River and the breathtaking Timor Sea and is comprised of 20 luxury 1 bedroom chalets set on the sand dunes with 180 degree ocean or river views.

Day 2 – Berkeley River Lodge to Kimberley Coastal Camp

Lunch in the canypn at Berkeley River Lodge
Lunch in the canyon at Berkeley River Lodge

Lift off after breakfast with a delicious picnic on board, prepared by the Berkeley River Lodge chef. Today’s flight takes in the remote Kimberley‘s northern coastline, with craggy cliffs, white coves and plentiful sealife to view from above. Land atop the twin waterfalls of the King George Falls to explore then visit Kalumburu, an Aboriginal community where the mission is still in place with an astonishing museum curated by the Benedictine monks who have spent their lives here. Rounding the top of WA and flying past Steep Head Island you’ll come in to land on the shell beach at your home for the next two nights, Kimberley Coastal Camp.

Day 3 – Kimberley Coastal Camp

Kimberley Coastal Camp
Kimberley Coastal Camp

An exclusive retreat limited to just 12 guests, Kimberley Coastal Camp is unpretentious, laid back and set in an exquisite location that is again only accessible by helicopter or boat. Jules and Tub are your hosts who will welcome you into their beautiful home at the far north west corner of Australia. Jules is an incredibly talented chef and prepares all sorts of delicious meals. Tub will take you out on the water to fish, explore and forage for oysters, then cook it up for lunch on a pristine beach. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy here on your ‘no fly day’, from fishing – the Admiralty Gulf is recognised as one of the best fishing destinations in Australia – to exploring the hidden galleries of exquisite art forms that adorn caves and rock panels throughout Yalrundair.

Day 4: Kimberley Coastal Camp to Mitchell Falls, Prince Regent River and El Questro

Today’s adventure will take you along the coast first and then inland. Departing after early breakfast you’ll soar over the Mitchell Plateau to orbit over and land at the top of the mighty 4-tiered Mitchell Falls. Your pilot will guide you on a walk to get the best of this iconic Australian feature. You’ll then fly to the coast and may land at Naturaliste Island, to refuel if necessary, where there’s the chance to see turtles. Continue through Prince Frederick Harbour, a natural harbour with bays, coves, spectacular cliffs and mangrove forests.

Mitchell falls

View pearl farms, the King Cascades flowing into the Prince Regent River, Mt Trafalgar, Mt Waterloo and much more as you continue over rugged inland pastoral leases to Drysdale River Station to refuel, a remote fuel and accommodation stop on the Kalumburu Road. The last leg for the day takes you over the central Kimberley, flying over parts of the Gibb River Road, Home Valley Station and the famous Pentecost River Crossing. The glow of the afternoon sun on the red rocks of the Cockburn Range makes a stunning backdrop to sunset drinks location on top of one of the pinnacles. On sunset you’ll fly to El Questro landing on the lawn helipad at the Homestead. Over 800,000 acres in size, El Questro extends for approximately 80 kilometres, most of which has never been explored. The Homestead sits amid a cool oasis shaded by palm trees and tropical greenery, perched atop an escarpment that plummets into the Chamberlain River.

Day 5: El Questro

El Questro
El Questro

Today is another ‘no fly’ day, which gives you the chance to relax and enjoy the wide range of complimentary excursions that are included at El Questro – the majority of which are exclusive to Homestead guests.

Day 5: El Questro to Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle), Lake Argyle and Kununurra

Lift off from the El Questro Homestead lawn helipad after breakfast to soar out over the Chamberlain River and fly south passing over the Elgee cliffs bordering the Durack River. Explore vast tracts of cattle station empires and marvel at the tenacity of our early pioneers in settling this rugged land. We pass over the traditional lands of the Kija and Djaru people and their community at Warmun, where many famous Aboriginal artists such as Rover Thomas and Queenie McKenzie lived and worked. Your destination is Purnululu National Park, a World Heritage Listed area, celebrated for the valuable cultural and natural assets it holds including the Bungle Bungle Range, a 350 million year old sandstone massif that rises up to 578 metres above sea level.

Bungle Bungles - HeliSpirit
Fly over the Bungle Bungles

The range stands 200 to 300 metres above a woodland and grass-covered plain, with steep cliffs on the western face. Elsewhere, particularly where Piccaninny Creek has formed Piccaninny Gorge, the range is cut by deep gullies and breaks up into complex areas of ridges and domes, with prominent orange and black or grey bands. Land at Bellburn airfield in Purnululu to join a private overland tour that comprises a drive to the massif and then a guided walk through the striped sandstone domes and further into Cathedral Gorge, named due to its excellent acoustics. Margie is the local guide and her family has lived in the area for literally tens of thousands of years so she knows all the best places. In the afternoon you’ll depart Purnululu, flying north over the Argyle Diamond Mine, where rare pink diamonds are found, then over huge Lake Argyle, the biggest manmade lake in the southern hemisphere. Its volume is said to be over 21 times that of Sydney harbour. The surrounding ranges that hold back the freshwater body will be glowing in the late afternoon light. Land on a mountain pinnacle where you can drink a toast to the Kimberley and its spectacular landscape before flying in to Kununurra and the Ord Valley which is always spectacular, an oasis of lush farms, big waters and colourful ranges – a fitting end to your unforgettable helicopter adventure. Your pilot will transfer you to your Kununurra accommodation and say farewell.

These luxury Kimberley Air Safaris operate from April 1st through to October 15th and do not have set departure dates. April and May offer the best time for Barramundi fishing and the waterfalls will be flowing well. The landscape is still green after the monsoonal Wet season. June to August are cooler months, with September and October starting to warm up ahead of the monsoon season. The fleet is varied and will depart with just 2 people or up to 12 people at a maximum, as the destinations you’ll stay at are small and exclusive.

Australia’s Best Guides – Grace Mitchelson – Bullo River Station

If you head up to Bullo River Station in the remote Top End, there’s a fair chance that Grace Mitchelson will be your guide. This 500,000 acre working cattle station provides guests with a unique tourism experience, combining authentic outback adventures with life on the farm. Grace is one of those beautiful women that is both down to earth and supremely capable and when she effortlessly showcased Bullo River Station to us we were all in awe. We asked her to tell us a little bit about herself.

Please explain a little bit about who you are and what you do at Bullo River Station.
I’m a guide at Bullo River Station, which means showing guests what it is like to live on a working cattle station, and what remote outback life is like.  This involves showing the cattle activities but also activities like fishing and horse riding, things the team love doing on their days off, as well as just exploring this amazing property.

I was born on a farm in Tasmania, where my parents still are, so I have known farming all my life.  I left Tassie in 2012 for my first job as a jillaroo in Queensland, and then I was able to transfer within the company to two other stations, one in the NT and another on the NT/WA border.  After several seasons, I wanted to get into tourism so I got a job at Horizontal Falls for 2 years, and then working on the Great Escape expedition vessel, based out of Broome.  So I had a lot of varied experience when I started working at Bullo for the 2018 season.

What got you started with remote outback guiding and what do you find most interesting about it?
I have a love of the land which got me started here.  The country is continuously changing, from red rocks, blue skies, green bush after the wet, billabongs, it’s all so picturesque.  This country is why I do what I do and I love sharing it with people.  I’m also learning every day from the guests who visit.  A recent guest had such a great knowledge of native plants that he encouraged me to start collecting and pressing plants, to start a visual diary. I would never have thought of that but it’s something I now do and it’s helping me learn more about the bush here.

How do you bring Bullo River Station to life on your tours?
I get people involved by them participating, not just observing.  It is so exciting to see people participate in a new experience, to see their excitement and enjoyment.

Why do you think it’s important that people learn about  life on an outback cattle station?
Live cattle export has had some bad press so it’s important to show people how we manage our cattle, and the care and passion we have for healthy animals that are treated humanely.  Guests can visit our yards and paddocks, there’s nothing hidden.  It’s important that guests understand how cattle stations operate and see where their food comes from – in our instance, beef, fish and even bush tucker, plants that can allow people to live off the land.

If people wanted to find out more about life on Bullo River Station or the Top End are there any particular books, documentaries or websites you would recommend?
As the original owner, Sara Henderson’s biographies give a good history of Bullo River Station and her experiences in establishing the Station and Homestead.

I love wildlife books, and plant books, particularly that cover the Top End. Many have been to me recommended by guests – I find two really useful; Native Plants of Northern Australia by John Brock and A Guide to Wildlife and Protected Areas of the Top End by Linley McKay.

Is there anything else you’d like to add that hasn’t been covered by the questions already posed?
I guess just the multi-faceted aspect of my job.  Every day is varied – I could be down at the cattle yards in the morning and on a boat on the Bullo River in the afternoon and finish the day on a rock ledge overlooking the Victoria River at sunset.  I’m also continuously learning, especially now that Bullo has a partnership with Australian Wildlife Conservancy, which is running several conservation and science projects on the property.

What’s your favourite Australian animal and why?
I have too many. Maybe Brolgas because I love how they dance, and they are so pretty when they fly.

What place is Australia’s best-kept secret?
Tasmania – home is where the heart is and the Tasman Peninsula in the south of Tasmania is just stunning scenery, with the rugged terrain and cliffs.

What haven’t you seen / done in Australia that you’d like to and why?
Diving at Lizard Island

Finally, how can people follow you on social media?

Wildlife Conservation Sanctuary Heli Swag Adventure

Imagine visiting a place so remote and so isolated that it’s like going back in time to pre-European days, where animals that have gone extinct elsewhere on mainland Australia thrive in uninterrupted peace. There is a wildlife sanctuary in the north west Kimberley that offers just this.

The sanctuary is home to more than 30 animal species that are found nowhere else in Australia. Being so inaccessible there is no accommodation and it is even difficult to get there by 4×4 which is what makes it such a special experience for those wanting to get off the beaten track. It plays s a vital role to play in protecting and restoring the endangered wildlife of northern Australia.

For philanthropic guests interested in conservation in Australia this is the experience of a lifetime. Within the sanctuary is a field research station, strategically positioned at the frontline in a battle to save some of Australia’s most endangered mammals from extinction.

Accessed by helicopter, guests would sleep in traditional Aussie swags and spend time with researchers in one of the most unique locations in the world.

Note that this experience would require a significant donation to the sanctuary in addition to the costs of the experience.

If this conservation experience appeals then please contact Alquemie to discuss what opportunities are available. This bespoke experience is by request only and at the discretion of the sanctuary.

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH RESEARCHERS ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

The Great Barrier Reef is arguably the most impressive of the world’s seven natural wonders and certainly Australia’s most famous tourist attraction. Stretching along Australia’s eastern coastline and made up of over 3,000 individual reef systems, the Great Barrier Reef offers visitors a wealth of experiences in its tropical waters.

An experience on the Great Barrier Reef is by far one of the most requested highlights of any Alquemie itinerary and we love to send our clients out to see this magical marine beauty. Stays at luxurious resorts like Lizard Island, qualia on Hamilton Island and newly re-opened InterContinental Hayman Island give guests an opportunity to truly appreciate life on the reef.

In 2018 Alquemie became a founding member of Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, an organisation using the collaborative power of the masses to reduce human caused environmental impacts around the globe (such as single use plastics) as well as supporting scientific research on the Great Barrier Reef. Through our contacts, the team at Alquemie can create bespoke experiences for guests that are interested in the work that is being done on the reef.

The types of experiences might include:

  • Fast tracking reef regeneration with baby corals / reseeding & restoring coral
  • Witnessing annual coral spawning (timed with lunar cycles and water temperatures – usually around October or November full moons)
  • Tracking marine mammals
  • Diving with marine researchers
  • Spending time on research / scientific vessels

Note that any of the above would require a donation to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef in addition to the costs of the experience.

If a behind-the-scenes Great Barrier Reef conservation experience appeals then please contact Alquemie to discuss what opportunities are available.
